Copenhagen approves the largest-ever cycling budget
This year’s budget agreement in the City of Copenhagen is the largest ever in terms of funds allocated to cycling-related projects. More than DKK 600 million has been set aside for initiatives that improve Copenhagen as a cycling city and make it safer to get around by bike.
“I’m very happy and proud that we’ve gained more momentum for cyclists with the largest cycling budget Copenhagen has ever seen. There’s more funding for safe school routes, green waves for cyclists, and bike connections that make it easier and safer to cycle in Copenhagen. This is extremely important because more cycling means better climate protection and a city with more greenery and less traffic,” says Line Barfod, the Mayor of Technical and Environmental Affairs.
Among the projects:
- it’s a priority to make cycling more safe for children, hence a new safe school route will be established in Nørrebro,
- a new bicycle bridge will be built across Copenhagen’s harbour, connecting the area by the Little Mermaid to Refshaleøen, a district often visited by tourists for its food market and some of the most hip restaurants and cafés in town
- The cycling route to Refshaleøen will be made safer with separated bike lanes from car traffic
Line Barfod believes large investments in cycling are necessary to maintain Copenhagen’s status as a cycling city:
“We spend large sums every year supporting cars in Copenhagen, for example, DKK 200 million just on road restoration, which primarily benefits cars. So, it’s only fair and long overdue that we invest more in bicycles. We must continue this in future budgets.”
