What was once a beloved Christmas tradition among many locals and visitors will soon return after many years of absence.
From November, a circular 1,300-square-meter rink will wind around the historic Krinsen, making the public square at Kongens Nytorv in the heart of Copenhagen a festive destination for locals as well as visitors to the city.
Copenhagen Christmas / KBH – Commerce & Culture (KCC) have revived the popular Copenhagen attraction, which became very popular when it first opened back in 1999 and in the years to come.
The winter season of 2008/2009 was the last time people could enjoy the skating rink, as it had to close down due to the construction of new metro lines in Copenhagen.
Last year, KCC organised a smaller 300 sqm ice rink on the square, but this year the rink will be more than four times bigger, stretching all the way around Krinsen, an oval garden surrounding the statue of King Christian V.
Copenhageners and tourists of all ages can look forward to a magical winter experience as they lace up their skates and glide across the ice, surrounded by historic buildings such as Hotel d'Angleterre, Magasin du Nord, and The Royal Danish Theatre.
In recent years, Kongens Nytorv has been the setting for a recurring Christmas market, which this year will take place at Thorvaldsens Square instead. However, visitors to Kongens Nytorv won’t miss out on the Christmas market experience. The square will also host a small weekend market (Friday-Sunday) offering quality products.
The revival of the ice rink is part of a larger effort to strengthen Copenhagen’s Christmas traditions, and the new rink is expected to become a central part of the city’s winter activities when it opens in November – the specific date is yet to be revealed.
