Congresses and events as drivers of sustainable development

One of Wonderful Copenhagen’s goals for 2030 is that tourism in Greater Copenhagen should accelerate the green transition locally and globally.

Congresses and events have the potential to tackle societal challenges and create lasting impacts. Yet, we must acknowledge that these assemblies can leave a less positive footprint on the host destination, including carbon emissions (transport) and substantial material usage. Copenhagen is a city and a destination with a strong focus on sustainability and green transition. So, consequently, we have a responsibility to address these climate challenges.

Our aim is that congresses and events hosted in Copenhagen serve as catalysts for sustainable development, with a particular focus on the reduction of CO2-emissions and the path towards balancing out the amount of greenhouse gases produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere (Net-Zero).

Copenhagen Sustainability Guide is a tool that we continue to develope, encourage and assist congresses and events in Copenhagen to emerge as a new generation of sustainable advocates.

The Guide has been developed as part of Wonderful Copenhagen’s Net-Zero Climate Roadmap for Copenhagen’s tourism. Inspired by the UN’s Target Corridor Framework and national expertise, it aligns with the Paris Agreement’s 2-degree reduction goals for 2030 and 2035 and supports the Science Based Targets Net Zero Standard for the long-term goal in 2050.

With this roadmap in mind and based on client feedback, Copenhagen Sustainability Guide calculates and reports on CO2-emissions distributed across six categories (international transport, virtual attendance, local transport, accommodation, venue & event design, food & beverage as well as Beyond Value Chain Mitigation Efforts). Before and/or after the congress/event has taken place in Copenhagen, and with all inclusive measures to incorporate both the positive and negative sides of travel.

Please find a link to Copenhagen Sustainability Guide below, as well as a document on how we calculate CO2-emissions.
